The value of uncertainty
We predict the future to steer our present decisions: How will stock prices evolve and what are the optimal portfolio choices now? Will a certain therapy kill the cancer in a patient, and what is the best therapy for her? In other situations we investigate unknown mechanisms, to decide about interventions: How do infections spread between fish farms and which regulations can be protective? What movies does a user prefer and which shall we recommend him now? Understanding and forecasting are never 100% sure. Given the available knowledge and data, we make conclusions which have a certain uncertainty.  But uncertainty is not just a problem;  it also creates value.
